Oh God, I sure HOPE not. I absolutely HATE prequels. I like the chronology to move forward with the release dates of the movies. I saw about ten minutes of "Star Wars five, (or it it Star Wars one?), at a friend's house, and refuse to watch a single prequel. Done properly, you should be able to have a "movie marathon party", and run the films in the order of their release dates, and have the special effects STEADILY improve with each one, which is NOT what would happen with Star Wars, so I stay from any of the prequels of any movie.
If Avatar turns out to be a prequel, then I will keep, frequently enjoy, and cherish Avatar one, two, and three, but never even watch Avatar four.

More Avatar films would be cool, though it seems like the next is still a long ways off. Hopefully JC doesn't get too far ahead of himself

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with prequels, just that they tend to be badly done afterthoughts to squeeze out more money (e.g. Star Wars Episodes 1-3), and often an insult to the series proper (e.g. that abrams thing). If anyone can do one well, it's JC, but I still don't want it to be an afterthought deal. I do really want to know more about Grace's story though.

Take Star wars as an example. If I wanted to have an all afternoon, into the night, sleepover Star Wars Mega Marathon, I would want to start at the beginning of the Story, which would be the first prequil, and take the story chronologically to the end.
If I were to do that, we would have these really good special effects in the first three, which were actually the LAST three, and THEN, throw everyone into a tub of icewater when we saw the HOKEY by comparison effects of the ORIGINAL movies. I'm just NOT willing to endure that, so I ditched my original Star Wars movies, which were all on VHS, and never bothered to get anything on DVD.
I am just HOPING that JC doesn't put us into THAT type of situation, I would just "opt out".

What are you talking bout....there are ONLY two Star Wars Movies. Shame George Lucas died before he could make "Revenge of the Jedi".

So....at least four Avatars. Cool, I just hope the fourth one comes out before I turn a hundred.

What, you don't wanna see kindergarten Neytiri? It might be pretty funny.

I know some people don't like this idea, but I think it would be cool if there were ruins on Pandora of a civilization more advanced than the Na'vi.

There are some really cool things you could do with that; like if they were another sapient species that were threatening the planet, but Eywa figured out what was going on and did something to alter the climate and kill them off.

Honestly, do not want.

It's relatively implausible (although not impossible from a purely evolutionary standpoint) and I think would completely ruin the message.

This is where none-linear storytelling comes into play... (Which is incidentally something JC has hinted at for Avatar also.)

The "best" order to watch Star Was is Episode 4, 5, 2, 3, and 6.

Start with the good action and introductions of 4 and 5; then go to the back-story from 2 and 3; and then resolve everything in 6 as originally intended.

There's no saying that Avatar 1, 2, ... n are going to be in chronological plot order.

^But what if they abandoned said "technology" because they had lost their "humanity" in a sense and decided to go back to a more simple way of living? Its fun to play with canon!

Yeah, JC's really going to have to speed up this timeline if he wants six movies.

Maybe the message you're married to, but I think that would be a pretty cool idea, among many others. JC already said there will be other planets/moons involved, so there could very well be another species (though I suppose that's not likely).
