Has 3D had it's day?

Just found my way to this link...somehow...regarding 3D films and is it the end? No one seems to have been able to match or exceed Avatar's brilliance!

I think that if we can go to such a high speed frame rate, that the image is truly seamless, that will be fine. I can't stand wearing those STUPID two color glasses anyway. I have never seen the 3D version of AVATAR, and the 2D version on a huge screen that you sit close enough to so that if fills your peripheral vision, will draw you right into the movie. THERE you go, how about concave letterbox, IED T.V.'s that are a hundred something inches wide, and you sit six feet from the screen. Surround sound, with subwoofers IN the seats, so you FEEL the low frequency stuff in your Back, and the backs of your Thighs. THAT would BE something.

It's a recession. Add to that they filmmakers are seeing 3D less and less as "easy way to add £2 to the price" and more as a genuine feature in its own right - just see how "IN 3D!!!!!" has dropped off advertising to a minimal bit somewhere at the edge.

I honestly haven't seen much in the way of new good films at all recently, so if "Good 3D film" is a subset of "Good film" then naturally there will be few. Perhaps people are just realising that a hasty postproduction rush job looks bad, so they need to actually make 3D films properly now

That said, that's a WTF article. To quote, "Torsten Hoffmann is a German who recently moved his 3DContent Blog website to Australia." == what. Do they mean he moved the site to a new server? ¬_¬

Again it just depends on the film... I'm not going to go see a film in 3-D "just cuz I can" it needs to be worth the extra money (AVATAR, Life of Pi was cool in 3-D, How To Train Your Dragon, Titanic, [I'll admit Titanic was just cuz I could xD]) because for example, at a movie theater here in the states (california to be exact) a regular movie is $11... 3-D is $14.50... thats quite a jump... i forgot what IMAX is id say $16-$18... so its what you want to pay for and experience

If another movie with breathtaking visuals came out like AVATAR, ect. sure why not in 3-D

Some people say they hate it cuz of the glasses, others cuz they dont like the way it looks, but personally me and my lover love it (he has a 3-D TV now and so we watch some movies in 3-D) because to us it pulls us into the worlds further =^-^=

This. Pretty much the rule I follow when I have a choice between 3D or 2D - how the film was originally made. I haven't seen a 3D film since Avatar in IMAX oh so long ago.

I think 2 things will lift it up again. One is more really great 3D movies that make really good use of the effect (the time for impressing the audience with things flying at them is over). Avater 2 and 3 maybe? - the other will probably be 3D without glasses, though that changes only little in respect to making these films. I agree that the part of making a few bucks more by making a film in 3D are probably coming to an end. Eventually people will probably not pay that much more for a 3D movie than for a regular movie, when the novelty of it is gone. For filmmakers and cinemas this may seem like "its over" because they cannot easily make additional money from it, which mewans that probably those cinemas who did not yet get it installed may think twice if they want to invest the money - though maybe eventually they have to, just to stay in business as people will just take it for granted.

I think that might have a great impact on it sticking around, is if the same versions of the same movies that can be bought in 2d, are readily available in 3D. Case in point is AVATAR. Ateyo and I have three copies of the three CD "Collectors Edition regular DVD. THIS is the only version of the movie that we are interested in because it has the 18 minutes that was originally in the film, but CUT so that it could be shown in IMAX theaters. That 18 minutes, was the 18 minutes that NEVER should have been cut.
We don't know if the 3 disk "Collector's Edition is available in Blu-Ray, and have been told that it is NOT available in 3D.
That rules 3D, or 3D players OUT in our opinion.

Avengers was pretty good in 3D. I'm sorry to say I did not get to see HTTYD in 3D. If I get the opportunity at some point in the future, I will.

But Transformers 3 certainly gained next to nothing from 3D. If I had left that theater and someone told me 2/3rds of the movie hadn't actually been in 3D as an experiment to see if anyone would notice a difference, I would have believed him.


I plan to see Jurassic Park 3D. Although that was because I never got to see Jurassic Park in a theater originally and I really want to (It's #4 on my list of top 5 favorite movies). I don't care that much for the 3D element to it.

I must admit, originally I thought I would never beable to see 3D coz I'm colour blind and my left eye does not fire on all cylinders. But when I came out of the cinema in a complete daze having just seen Avatar - in 2D - for the first time, I thought I should go and see it in 3D. So off I went to an IMAX. But did it make a difference to me! It was like looking through a window and being transported into that space.

For me no other film has matched it really. Some films seem to get close with the odd shot here and there, but they never match the seeming perfection that JC directed to with Avatar.

If something is shot in 3D, I'll see it in 3D rather than not, especially in New Orleans where tickets are generally a lot cheaper than elsewhere. There have been two movies shown in 3D at any given time in most big theaters since 2010, so I wouldn't call it the end yet, and also don't think the end is near.

Oh, you mean 3D...riiight. Well, no it isn't the end I don't think. What is needed is refinment and skilling up for 3D filming. It is not as simple as strapping to cameras together. There is so much involved in understanding screen size and stuff. Do it for the quick buck is probably over. But getting it right is the real trick now.

I don't mind wearing the glasses....I already have to! When 3D is done really well, though, it is like what is before you is just behind the screen and going into the background.

I feel I should mention - I'm not a big moviegoer and haven't seen some of those you mentioned. All those ticket prices adding up, y'know...

The "objects flying at the camera" is already a lot more toned down. There are two specific moments I can think of in Avatar; one being in the rerelease.

I remember first time I saw a 3D film, back when the BFI IMAX opened so some time in the 90s, the films were all objects hovering directly in front of you and zooming towards your head, because it was a gimmick/selling point back then. Moving past that is just the same as when colour first came out, having realistic colour rather than bright stylised colour.

It can be extremely cheesy watching 3-d and something does that in the sense. Where they intentionally have something fly at the camera like, "AH LOOK AT OUR 3-D!!!"

Things like that are why I'm glad I did not see Dolphin Tale 3D in theaters.
