I was doing research for a story and discovered that 'Jake' being a short form for 'Jacob' means...'substitute' or 'supplanter'.
Now how about that for an interesting coincidence!?
Details that make you want to go hmmmmm.....

I just noticed that out of all the Jake threads (and believe me, there are LOADS) this is the least I have contributed to! So...yay for Jake's personality! <3

One thing about Jake that I noticed was when he was rolling down the ramp at the beginning he says 'You may be out but you never lose the attitude'.
Compared to other Marines, he had no attitude. He was no 'dumb grunt', it could be that he had gone a little soft, but he did not have a Marine attitude. He thought he did, but I think it was just one of his little facades he had to put up.
Now, once he became Toruk Makto, that was attitude!
Question for the Jake fans...
If Jake is given a new name... what do you think it would be? I have one already for my story but not entirely satisfied with it. What are your ideas?

Uhh thats quite interesting. The german wiki additionally claims that Jakob also means "God saves ...".

Something else that I've been pondering about Jake, especially for the sequel.
He is being 'reborn' into the Na'vi, does this mean he gets a new name? Will he want a new name?
He is now leader of the Omatikaya, and Toruk Macto, but those are both 'titles' not a real name. They could call him Toruk Macto but what would be his real name?
I was writing a fanfic about his transference experience and how Eywa would give him a new name, but I can't come up with a good one so the story is stalled.
Would he still 'feel' like Jake or would he come out of the experience truly reborn and want a new name to reflect his new life? Would Mo'at give him a new name? Everyone in the clan knows him as Jake, but that was before. Would old habits die hard?
I keep rolling those questions around in my head and finally decided to put it on here for someone else to contemplate.

Neytiri didn't leave Jake and Grace to die. For a start, the Omaticaya had no idea that Hometree was going to collapse and fall to the ground, crushing not only the two Avatars but a large number of their own people. It makes no sense for the Na'vi to want or hope that their home of 10000 years would fall over just for the sake of killing Jake and Grace, the Na'vi would have just cut their throats immediately after binding them or during the RDA's assault on Hometree if they wanted them dead, nothing was stopping them from doing so, but they spared the two. Not even Grace knew Hometree would come crashing down on all of them, and the script itself states neither Grace or any of the clan expected Hometree to fall to the ground. The fact is, only Jake, Quaritch and the RDA knew this. Plus, the missiles were aimed inside Hometree and only those who were still inside were in danger, Jake and Grace, on the other hand, were outside Hometree so they were safe from the attacking missiles, at least until the Hometree fell down which would've squashed them had Mo'at not unbinded them, but she and the other Na'vi wern't expecting that and their reactions when they realise Hometree is about to come falling down indicates that, as well as Grace's when Jake tells her that Quaritch is gonna blow the collumns in order to make Hometree fall to the ground, she looks straight at Hometree and says "My God!" upon learning this information which suggests she didn't know about it either. Also, the Na'vi wern't actually planning to execute either of them, they were just threatening to slit their throats if the RDA didn't back off, according to the script, and since the RDA attacked Hometree anyway and the Omaticaya left without killing either Jake or Grace, it was just a bluff. When Neytiri hesitated for a long moment before heading out with the clan, it was to show part of her still cared about Jake and that she realised in that moment, she would never see either Jake or Grace again now that they were outcast from the clan. That hurt Neytiri deep inside, but she choked back those feelings for the sake of the clan and moved out without saying a word, its obvious her heart wasn't into throwing them out but she did it because they were considered traitors after Jake confessed his original mission to them all and she didn't have a choice but to leave them behind because its what the Na'vi wanted at the time, she didn't expect Hometree to fall over and squash both of them as well as many of her own people. Hometree was already destroyed and in flames before it even fell, the clan expected something along the lines of this to happen, but they didn't think that it would fall to the ground, hence their disbelief when it does.
