Those pics are amazing.

But volcanoes freak me the heck out :p One has to have a massive respect for nature - these sorts of things are out of control. We have to realise that even though we may generally think we run the planet, we really, really don't!!

Thanks to the volcano I got four days more holiday. I was in Portugal and couldn't fly back home because of the closure of the European airspace due to ash particles.
It was a strange situation, because I really had to go back to work because of an experiment I had to carry out, but it was just impossible. I rebooked my flight and was so lucky to get the first flight after the airspace was open again. When I came here I realized that it was a gift that I had to stay there longer. People always think that some things are so important, like meetings or deadlines, that it's the end of the world if these things are not done in time. But in a situation like that you relize that the world is turning and life goes on, no matter what we humans do.

There were many people at the airport and all the businessmen were stressed because they had some important work to do and couldn't get there. Even our German chancellor stranded in Portugal and couldn't get back to Germany. But life went on and it was more peaceful in these days. And after her travel by bus and car the chancellor said: It was nice.

What she meant was the fact that Europe was paralyzed for some days and all the hectic pace, the stress, the noise of the planes stopped for a while. Everything just goes faster and faster these days, so what the world really needs is to slow down. No man-made initiative had been able to realize this, but finally the earth (the volcano) succeeded. Was a great experience !!!

BTW, Stanley, the pictures are truly amazing. Haven't seen them before, even though I'm a victim of this volcano

Wow thats an interesting story thanks for sharing! Indeed, people meeting deadlines, the chaos and all of that, sometimes we just need to take a step back and take a breather, get some rest. If I'm late for work, I used to panic... sure I'd treat my car with the upmost respect, still driving slow over all the stupid california speed bumps and water way dips so I wont scratch the paint and take it easy when driving so I don't over stress anything (I may be an auto technician, but I still fear my cars performance, something in the back of my mind lol... somedays I do go for a pull or two for the excitement of it ) but I get angry very easily at someone on the road and such and one day I slapped myself and said, "dude why don't you calm down? take it easy, just cruise, you may be a minute or two late, but its not the end of the world, just stay a few minutes after to make up for lost time. enjoy the drive and scenery and wonderful weather and crank up some good tunes" so now I don't let being late to work bother me

Chaiten's volcano in Chile during it's eruption back in 2008 ... Chile has everything, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis ...
