Default Storytelling, poems, wisdoms

I've been thinking about a thread like this for a while, so why in the world not?

There is Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories thread, it has very interesting stories, but those I know & would like to share are not only aboriginal. So anybody who wants to "listen" & "tell" stories, legends, even your interesting story-like experiences that give "food for thought", come here!

Here goes one:

A Tibetan Poem

1. I walk down a street.
There is a huge pit at the corner.
I fall down.
I feel lost... impotent.
It is not my fault.
It takes me forever to get out.

2. I walk down the same street.
There is a huge pit at the corner.
I pretend not to see it.
I fall down there again.
I can't believe that I am in the same place.
It is not my fault.
It still takes me long to get out.

3. I walk down the same street.
There is a huge pit at the corner.
I see it.
I fall down there anyway... it is a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out straightaway.

4. I walk down the same street.
There is a huge pit at the corner.
I pass it by.

5. I walk down another street.

(Some people say it's from The Tibetan Book of Life but I have no proof so it's safer to say "Author Unknown)

That was a cool one, kind of like an ancient analysis of psychology. Never heard it before or really anything Tibetan. I have a decent appreciation for religious, cultural, spiritual (whatever you find to be most politically correct guys) stories as literature and will probably be adding to this thread a little later.

Tibetan lama is being chased by a tiger right over a cliff saffron robes flapping uselessly around him. Yet he gets snagged by a branch. The snarling tiger is just feet away. The cliff is a sheer drop to his certain death. And the branch is cracking. To his left he sees a flower. In his last moment on earth he smiles and says, "beauty!"

this was a good thought to have at the last moment irayo Ateyo!

Go ahead Moco Loco it will be interesting to hear your stories!

Here goes a street wisdom:
If you lent someone 20 bucks & never saw that person again, it was probably worth it.
(maybe not very spiritual - but wise! )

Two yound Tibetan monks are walking together and come to a stream. There is a young woman on the bank, fearful of crossing.
One says, "Young lady, we have taken a vow of hastity. We cannot possibly carry you across the stream.
The other monk picked up the lady and carried her across to safety.
He set her down safely on the the other side. She thanked him and said their goodbyes. The monks continued on in silence, but the first one was doing a slow burn.
"My brother what is troubling you?"
"We have made a vow of chasity. Why did you carry that woman?"
"My Brother, I put down the lady on the riverbank, but you have carried her all the way here!"

Moral: Sometimes, we insist on our own misery!

nice story Ateyo, I read / heard it before, I don't remember, where or how...
Hehe this thread has taken on an Oriental flavor here goes a Chinese story:

Good Luck? Bad Luck?
There is a Chinese story of a farmer who used an old horse to till his fields. One day, the horse escaped into the hills and when the farmer's neighbors sympathized with the old man over his bad luck, the farmer replied, "Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?" A week later, the horse returned with a herd of horses from the hills and this time the neighbors congratulated the farmer on his good luck. His reply was, "Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?"
Then, when the farmer's son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone thought this very bad luck. Not the farmer, whose only reaction was, "Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?"
Some weeks later, the army marched into the village and conscripted every able-bodied youth they found there. When they saw the farmer's son with his broken leg, they let him off. Now, was that good luck or bad luck?
Who knows?
Everything that seems on the surface to be an evil may be a good in disguise. And everything that seems good on the surface may really be an evil. So we are wise when we leave it to God to decide what good fortune and what misfortune is, and thank him (or Her!) that all things turn out for good with those who love him.
Author Unknown

I don't have enough fingers & toes to count just how many times this "good luck - bad luck" ebb & flow turned out to be true for my good self!

Life is an ocean - surf it! go with the flow...

I too know this story from personal experience: Niri Te stopped a gunfight while we lived in Arizona. One of the neighbors in that fight wanted us to side with him, but he had fired the first shot. In retribution, he made certain that we were thrown from our property But we ended up with more land Texas with enough space for a beautiful wide runway. I am looking forward to the bad luck/good luck story regarding our journey to the Meet-up in Seattle this summer! ATEYO

Hmm, interesting stuff here... I've read about the Buddihists stories that you mentioned apache.

I'll put up mine here, from ancient Native American lore. It's one of my favorites so far...

---------------

Lakota Instructions for Living

Friend do it this way - that is,
whatever you do in life,
do the very best you can
with both your heart and mind.

And if you do it that way,
the power of the Universe
will come to your assistance,
if your heart and mind are in Unity.

When one sits in the Hoop of the People,
one must be responsible because
all of Creation is related.
And the hurt of one is the hurt of all.
And the honor of one is the honor of all.
And whatever we do effects everything in the universe.

If you do it that way - that is,
if you truly join your heart and mind
as One - whatever you ask for,
that's the Way It's Going To Be.

that was BEAUTIFUL! I kept Seeing "Becoming One Of The People" scene in my mind. Really, really good, I am trying to stick to "do the best you can" rule - I learned it from The Teachings of Don Juan (altho I don't always manage but practice makes masters).
About "everything's connected", I am thinking about one story of Machiguenga natives who live in the Amazonas, it tells something similar. I'll have to translate it from Spanish though.

Irayo everybody for nice bedtime stories
Lights out, see you at dinner kitties

A Gypsy saying: "One hand doesn't clap" (i.e. it takes two to play the game, this is a two-way street etc.)

More Gypsies: Viviré - a song of Camarón de la Isla (a famous gypsy singer, not James Cameron! ) - a free-style translation of a fragment:

Here I am, sitting in the old square of my village
Where they gave me advices
But I always went my way
See, they gave me so many advices
That I didn't know what to do!
So it was better to go my way*

......................
To live & to dream,
To live & to dream,
I am only looking for freedom,
To live & to dream,
To live & to dream,
I am only looking for my freedom

*this is very funny cos I used to do this - ask people for advices in a situation of a doubt, & of course they did (people love giving pieces of their minds, asked or not!) - & in the end there would be so many different & often contradictory opinions that I would get even more confused, frustrated - & then rebel & "go my way" like Camarón - & it often happened to be the rightest solution! Basically, following the "intuition compass" which would point to the rightest advice - or to some solution of my own. Works!

Full lyrics in Spanish:
Letra de Vivire de Camarón de la Isla - MUSICA.COM

Video: (lots of clapping!! )

The massive mountains stand strong and firm
Clouds floating lightly over the Western sky.
The colours of the Rainbow,
Silver on the horizon
Dark grey, deep green over the summits
Sun fire, flame sky,
Embers and ashes, glowing -
Mountains agleam.
Song floods the air, Power flows,
Dancers are circling, Earth is resonating.

My own, from my experience at a Rainbow Gathering...

The voyage begins - never to end,
Never to stop, always following
The least-trodden path,
To find the Family at its end.

Oh, yes, it was a nice barefoot ( lukpena venu) walk on the tireafya'o, to be sure.

Oh, and yes again, I was skyclad there on many occasions, when the weather was warm. Actually, we had some sunny summer days, despite late September... and on one of those skyclad occasions, one sister adored my belly so much, that she wanted to cream it up with sunscreen. So, I applied lotion to her slender back, while she, a lithe and almost elven figure, took her sweet time to anoint my belly...

Here's a picture of her from her Facebook page (clothed, but a happy hippie nonetheless):

On our first meeting, she spontaneously called me "Ganesha", as Shiva's son, remover of obstacles, the one who serenely and happily digests all good and bad in life in his large belly... So, I didn't just walk new and shining spiritual paths there, I also had my belly deified...

Wiggling bare toes, delighted, in hindsight at a wonderful part of my life,

~*Txim Asawl*~

or ~*Ganesha*~ (as I have picked up that name, for my true self)

that's a nice sun-hugging picture of your sister! hehe I remember about your Ganesha belly to digest the sorrows of the world eh, and the big trunk - to remove the obstacles? I like Ganesha, he is one of my favourite manifestations of the Divine...

But you people are very brave to go skyclad I've been living a rather monastic life for the last 3 (5? 7?) years & would be scandalized. Somebody sent me Carnaval photos with some people going around Only in loincloths, or tiny sequinned tangas, cosplaying like a Playboy Girl or something, etc. ... & I couldn't even look, I had to switch the comp off, take a deep breath... and try again! convincing myself that I already know what a human body looks like, and there is Nothing wrong or shameful about it! Goodness, the prejudices & social conditioning & brainwashing that we carry around!

Anyways, I guess, if I were with a whole group of people in a situation when it is Normal to go around in birthday suits... I guess I would have dared... hmmm...
