Default Upgrades and the future

The upgrades that I announced a few days ago have been completed. If you notice anything not working properly, please report it in our Feedback forum near the bottom of the page.

As I mentioned in the announcement, these new upgrades are only a temporary fix. What we really need to do is upgrade to Vbulletin 4. To do that, the staff will have to do a rather involved project of trying to port as much of the look and feel of the current ToS, to the completely new VB4. VB3 styles are 100% incompatible with VB4, so we will be making it from scratch. We will do everything possible to keep the site looking and functioning the same. This will be done and tested in private, but we will let you know a few days before we are ready to change the live site.

Original announcement quoted below for reference:

Hello there. I'm sure you've all noticed things acting strangely lately, including the warning about this site being an "attack site". Some time ago, someone apparently exploited a security hole in one of the plugins that run on our forum. This mostly affected visitors coming to the site from the search engines, but it also got our site classified as an attack site. Our webhost found the issue a couple of days ago and purged it, which caused the bizarre site performance some of you saw. I repaired that damage a few hours later, but the vulnerability is there.

Therefore, sometime Saturday afternoon/evening (US time), the site will likely be down for an hour or two, assuming everything goes well, as we upgrade our plugins, and Vbulletin itself. For now, we are simply upgrading the forum to the last release of the 3.8.x line, but that is over a year old itself. We will be spending $210 of our donation money to get this done. It's become non-optional, as these latest issues clearly illustrate.

As I said, this new release we will be upgrading to, is still over a year old, and it may break some of our plugins, such as the site stats at the bottom of the page. What we really need to do, is upgrade to VBulletin 4. Anyone who came with us during the original split from Avatar Forums probably will cringe hearing that. Unfortunately, it's become a security necessity. We intend to do everything we can to match the look and function of the current ToS. It's the most important thing for us to do. We will design it ourselves, and will test it extensively before it is done. We don't have an exact timeline yet, and it may be a while, but you all need to know that it is coming.

One further note, about the site being compromised. While it did severe damage to our server and software, no passwords were compromised. Vbulletin stores user passwords in salted md5 hashes, which are virtually impossible to break, especially if your password is more than a few characters long, and is not a word. You may wish to change your password, just for peace of mind, but no one has accessed that info.

In a nutshell, we've been running on virtually the same software for the over two years we've been here, and it's finally come to the point where we no longer have a choice. We've avoided upgrading, not just to conserve our donation money (your money), but also to keep from having to change anything about the way the site looks or operates. It's no longer a choice.

Oh yes... we've temporarily disabled vbSEO, which was responsible for changing Vbulletin's ugly URLs to the friendly word-based URLs. This means every link to a ToS thread or page, other than the homepage, will NOT work. There is no way around this until we upgrade on Saturday.

Things should be working, but if you find any problems please report them so they can be fixed. Irayo

As for the future upgrade, we will keep you all informed in this, we may also make a test environment available to gather feedback on porting the current look to VB4.

The usual reason is that VB4 includes new major features, or changes architecture in a way that you can't translate between the two versions easily.

That's it there... vB4 has different default layouts for stuff - some things like the CSS won't need much porting, but the general feel will take a lot.

Just do your best for the VB4 upgrade guys, if it has to be done then it has to be done. I'm not going anywhere.

Because we'd have to do a DB migration and theme migration, if those were even possible. Licensing isn't a problem to arrange ourselves though . If other software was on the roadmap, it'd probably be SMF, but it isn't for anywhere at all in the foreseeable future.
