Default Greatest Male Characters In TV/Movies.

Since I did a thread for the females, it is only fait I do one for the males as well.

On a personal level, I have less males to talk about, probably because physical attraction is not a factor.

But anyway, I will start off with Jonny Rico of starship Troopers which is one of my favourite movies.

Jonny Rico - StarshipTroopers

Photos from Starship Troopers

"I'm from Buenos Aires and I say kill them all."

I really like Rico because he is standard guy, who is not courageous and has a good heart, although does not always make the right decisions in life. In may ways, Jonny Rico is very much like Jake, which is why I like them both. In summary, if I wasn't me, I would probably want to be something like Jonny Rico.

One of the interesting thing about Jonny Rico is that he undergoes a lot of hardship and loss in the movie. His girlfriend deserts him, his lover (and arguably true love) dies in battle, he loses his mentor, he loses his parents and he loses his native city, as well as countless other comrades.

Yet he is a fighter and willing to face adversity to do the things he thinks is right. Yet he is a flawed hero. In reality, he doesn't really achieve much by the end of the movie. and he makes some poor decisions, especially with regard to his love life, reflecting real life for everyone.

But you get the feeling he is someone who is experiencing life to the full and makes the most of the situations he is. In many ways he represents what many young men think and feel, and perhaps that is why I can relate to him so much.

But another main reason I like him is because of his school friend, lover, and comrade Dizzy Flores. I loved Dizzy and felt Jonny Roco was lucky that she loved him so much. If anything I wanted to be Jonny, so I could love Dizzy back.

Rupert Giles - Buffy the Vampire Slayers

Rupert Giles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When it comes to role models for middle aged father figures, Rupert Giles is the man.

He was truly an excellent character and gave old fuddy duddies a good name.

Steve Stifler - American Pie: American Wedding

Fileteve Stifler - American Wedding still.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For me Stifler in American Wedding is just like Neytiri in Avatar. While Neytiri outshines Jake in Avatar, Stifler outshines all the other characters in American Wedding.

Stifler came into his own in American Wedding. In the previous two American Pie movies, I found him to be a mildlly amusing secondary character.

But in American Pie he almost dominates everything with his own brand of vulgar and condescending humour.

He is an unlikely great character. He is vulgar rude, disrespectful and arrogant.
But I just found him hilarious and I still remember with fondness some of his vulgar quotes from the movie.

And lets not forget that Stifler did probably the best dance-off scenes ever to be done in a movie. Stifler doing a dance-off in a gay bar. Who would want to miss that?

hey! nice list you have here! im going to be biased and say Jake Sully.. for all the right reasons lol his personality is amazing, he is so determined and will do anything for Neytiri and the Na'vi and he is so kind, sweet and loving! he is such a great warrior, and fights for whats right instead for whats wrong. he also seems very playful and kind of childish, which is something i love.. the way he grabs onto Neytiri's tail and stuff.. he is amazing! and he is adorable!

Fox Mulder - The X Files

Fox Mulder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The truth is out there.

The X files was probably my favourite show in the early nineties. I only watched the early series and didn't watch beyong season 3.

I really liked Mulder as a character. Mulder was just the sort of guy I would like to be. As well as investigating the occult and supernatural, which I was interested at that time, I also felt he had many characteristics that I admire.

I found Mulder to be a cool guy. But he was also clever, humourous, professional, empathic, open-minded and inquisitive. But most importantly, Mulder had a very strong moral compass and was always trying to do the right thing.

I also liked his reltionship with his colleage Danna Scully. Althoughyou could sense a subtle attraction and deep emotional bond between the two, their relationship remained refreshingly platonic (at least for as long as I watched).

As time went on, I lost interest in the supernatural and thus the X-files. But Mulder will always remain one of my favourite characters and potential role-model.

Spike - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Seasons 1-5)

"We like to talk big... vampires do. "I'm going to destroy the world." That's just tough-guy talk. Strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood. The truth is, I _like_ this world. You've got...dog racing, Manchester United. And you've got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. With a real... passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Good-bye, Picadilly. Farewell, Leicester-bloody-Square."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_(...Vampire_Slayer)

Of all vampires represented on TV, Spike is definately my favourite.

Spike was a very popular character in BtVS, especially among fangirls. Fangirls loved him as a pin-up and a love interest for Buffy. I also like Spike, but for very different reasons as I found the romance between Buffy and Spike quite distasteful. As I have mentioned elsewhere, my Buffyverse ends at the end of season 5, so there is no romance between Spike and Buffy anyway.

But there are many good things about Spike. For me he was an enigma for a vampire. On one hand he seemed to rebel against everything vampires stood for because he was not really interested in destroying the world (as represented by the quote above). But on the other hand, he also represented the true nature of the vampire as he was extremely selfish and obessed with his own trivial desires.

In many, ways Spike was a typical vampire. He gained a sadistic pleasure in killing humans (and indeed every other life and undead form). Indeed Spike is so selfish that he is quite willing to fight and kill other vampires/demons when it suited his interest.

Also just like other fictional vampires, he can be sentimental and very much ruled by his human emotions, but it is a warped form of sentimatality that usually involves deviant behaviour of some kind. But on the other hand, Spike also could act with cold logic sometimes and acted with great intelligence. Spike, more than anything else was a survivor, and was capabale of fleeing, betrayal and switching sides on a moments notice to save his skin, which always ended up in various entertaining scenarios.

It could be argued that Spike was a vampire environamlentalist. Humanity is to Spike what trees are to humanity. Spike recognises that to get the most out of the world, he needs to preserve and live with humanity. However, he also suffers the typical human traits of indifference. Although he knows the end of the world would be bad, he doesn't really do anything about it out of neglect. It is only when he gets the chip in his head causing him pain that he reluctantly stops killing humans and starts protecting them instead.

What I like about Spike is that he in effect a bad-a$$ who is coerced onto the side of good. He doesn't really want or intend to fight for good, he just ends up fighting against evil because of circumstances. In many ways he represents the idea of "evil corrupted". Where an intrinsically evil person is corrupted into doing good against his will. That is Spike's case and that is what appeals to me.

Although I was not keen on the romance between Spike and Buffy, I did find it funny that Spike fell in love with Buffy. One of the scenes I most remember is when Spike wakes up in a cold sweat after having a romantic dream about Buffy, effectively reacting in the same way that a human would after an extremely worrying nightmare. In many ways, I liked the idea of the bad boy not getting the girl.

But apart from that, I found Spike to be amusing and I always enjoyed the fact that he ends up fighting for Buffy against his natural instincts. But on the other hand, it was clear to see that he enjoyed fighting regardless of who he was fighting against.

Peter Parker - Spiderman (2002)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man_(film)

Of all the Superhero films that have ever been released, the 2002 Spiderman was my favourite by a long way. In fact it was one of the few movies I saw more than once in the cinema. It is also one of the best super-hero creation movies that came out.

Spiderman was always my favourite super heros. Although he had superpowers, he was not over-powered and always had to use his intelligence to use his powers effectively, rather than winning the day by brute force. But given I like spiderman so much as a hero, the 2002 could have also been a big dissapointment. But for me it was just right.

Apart from that, there is nothing cooler than to be able to crawl on walls and swing between buildings. To some degree it is cooler than flying.

The main reason I like the movie so much was it's portrayal of Peter Parker. In the 2002, Peter Parker is an average guy with above average intelligence who finds he has super powers. Since Peter was not super rich guy (as per Iron Man and Batman), I always felt I would relate to Peter Parker in the 2002 movie, and in fact, even more so that with the Peter Parker in the comic strip.

Peter is a fallible but corageous hero, who when faced with choices and responsibility, makes the right choices. Also it was pleasing that he also get the girl in the end, especially as the girl was so nice.

well, Avatar didn't have a male character that I thought stood out from other characters in other movies, although quaritch was really good, so I will say...

-Tony Montana, Scarface
-Joker from Dark Knight

I'd have to say Aragorn from Lord of The Rings: There's been so many times when he's had to save people from certain death..

Yeah, I always considered Aragon to be a great character. In fact, in LotR there are several great characters to choose from including Gandalf, Legolass, Frodo, Sam and the list goes on

I'm drawing a blank on this.... I really should have some because I watch a sh*t load of TV and movies...
I like Jack Sparrow. He's quirky and weird but ultimately a good man.
The Tenth Doctor from Doctor Who (David Tennant will always be my Doctor)
