I've heard less than stellar comments from people who've read the comic.

This is the best ****ing movie I've seen since Avatar. I could watch it over and over, and I'm not the type to normally watch a movie more than once(with the exception of Avatar, D9, LOTR and Shyamalan movies). To say it's one of my new faves would be an understatement.

I hated this movie with every fiber of my being.

I am a part of the crowd they were attempting to cater to, and I was unpleased.

I've been playing videogames since I was 2, I own hundreds of old games and dozens of consoles, my room is full of action figures, comic books, trading cards, etc. etc.

They decided to take a comic book about a kid who seems to live in a world where video game physics/"laws of nature" govern things, and make it into a movie.

This would have been a great, great way to pick effects for the movie; base them off of actual videogames. The companies who own the IPs shouldn't mind; they got a Nintendo DS and the zelda theme in there without too much trouble.

But no; instead, I'm left, yet AGAIN, with the same old "Durr hurr dem gamerz are gunna love this stuff!" kind of thinking; nothing directly references a game, with a few very lonely exceptions, and the things I do get are really more like some weird cartoon.

Also, the game music that was playing on that guy's DS in the beginning was incorrect. The music was from Zelda: A Link to the Past. That music may have been ported to the DS in another zelda game, but the music was the 16-bit chipset version, and the DS uses much more powerful hardware than that. Nintendo hasn't used a similar sound chip since the days of the GBA.

This is what I mean. Hardcore gamers are a very fickle group. We spent whole childhoods rescuing princesses, eradicating alien menaces, saving fantastical lands from evil, and when our favorite things are represented in film or some other media, we expect it to be done right; no excuses. If you can't do it right, then please, leave it alone, and refrain from bastardizing it.

The rest of the movie was essentially a crappy chick flick; some guy wants a better girlfriend than the empty shell he currently has, and so he tries to win her over. The movie would have been much better if the videogame universe it took place in were more fleshed out, more direct references were made, and the sound effects/visual effects were more like they are in real games, instead of making up pretend ones. The story wasn't strong enough to make a movie out of, so they should have focused on making better special effects.

Aside from that, the only thing I reall disliked was the lead actor. I can't remember his name, but he was lifeless. I know the kid in the comic book was supposed to be that way, but IMO he really overdid it. I went and skimmed one of the graphic novels at a bookstore after I watched the movie (which I didn't finish :P) and they were like two different people.

/nerd rage

I know some people liked the movie. What I have found is that many of my friends (who are also hardcore gamers like myself) thought the same things I do about it, and that people who weren't going in "understanding" what it means to correctly represent that stuff liked it.

You would also like it if you like romances. I hate them, with a passion. Avatar could be considered some form of romance at its core, but...the way I viewed the romance there was different.

Basically, if you want to see this movie, but you aren't looking for well-made references and just want a good time, or you're seeing it with a love interest of some sort, you might have fun. If not, you might want to skip it.

Lol Raiden.

I thought it was clever/orignal and funny, but I don't think it was even trying to be anything more than that.

That was the other problem; it was, or at least thats how it wound up advertising itself (both officially and through word of mouth/reviews).

I don't usually base my decisions to see movies based solely on reviews, but those combined with what people told me about it or what I read about it made me sit down expecting something entirely different than what I got.

Were a fickle, fickle group. It's all or nothing when you want to represent us.

I hadn't seen anything about it before I saw it, thankfully. Same with Avatar. That's usually the best approach. But I know what you mean, and I can see how it would be disappointing to you with different expectations.
