Default The Dark Knight: The Joker

Quote:
Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was a drinker and a fiend. He'd beat mommy right in front of me. One night he goes off crazier than usual, mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit.

So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me and says 'why so serious?' Comes at me with the knife- 'why so serious?' Sticks the blade in my mouth- 'Let's put a smile on that face' and...

Why so serious?
Quote:
You look nervous- it's the scars isn't it? Wanna know how I got them? I had a wife, beautiful like you. Who tells me I worry too much. Who says I need to smile more. Who gambles. And gets in deep with the sharks. One day they carve her face, and we've got no money for surgeries. She can't take it.

I just want to see her smile again. I just want her to know I don't care about the scars. So I put a razor in my mouth and do this to myself... And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me... She leaves! See, now I see the funny side. Now I'm always smiling.
Quote:
Dent: Your men. Your plan.

Joker: Do I really look like a guy with a with a plan, Harvey? I don't have a plan... You know what I am?

I'm a dog chasing cars... I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it... I'm not a schemer, I show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are.
Quote:
Dent's alive, Jim. Just. But back at M.C.U.... the Joker's gone...

Gordon: With Lau? The Joker planned to be caught. He wanted me to lock him up in M.C.U..
Quote:
This city deserves a better class of criminal, and I'm going to give it to them. This is my town now. Tell your men they work for me.

Everything. Burns.
Just a little discussion about the Joker based on these quotes. Unfortunately Heath Ledger had most of the answers to who the Joker really was but why do you think the Joker is so contradictory in The Dark Knight? Why does he have different stories of how he got his scars? What's the real story?

Those kind of questions, basically trying to pin down the true character of the Joker.

The Joker's idea of "plan" varied between people. He regarded his own plan as the superior one, so thought-out that it was almost alien to anything anyone would regard as "normal". I think what the Joker meant before as "part of the plan" was a reference to the plans that all other regular people had. Their plans were guided by rules. The Joker had no rules.

The Joker's plan was perfect, except he came to the wrong conclusion at the end. He assumed everyone would turn ugly against each other; that's where the Joker was wrong. However, his material plans were flawless. He must have planted all the bombs in their places months and months before any of the events we see in "The Dark Knight" took place. While Wayne was taking down Falcone, the Joker was probably planting the last of his bombs in the hospital.

He thought of every move everyone would try to make on him. While in Arkham, he must've thought out all possible decisions that would've been made by the chief of police, the mayor, Gordon, everyone. He knew where the chief would be on the night he'd be poisoned, what the mayor would be doing and how to slip into the guard to assassinate him, what time the judge would enter her car, where Gordon would be after his arrest, what choice Batman would make to save Rachel while instead saving Dent, what Dent would turn into after his confrontation... He knew everything. He's by far the best criminal mastermind I've ever seen realistically portrayed on screen.

The Joker cared about nothing except for his own satisfaction. It was like a game to him. He didn't care about anyone's life; not even his own. He didn't care about respect, remorse, or anything. He just wanted to prove his mindset to the rest of Gotham, that everyone had a dark side like he did. Something happened to him... but I really don't know what it was.

As for the "Scar" stories, I think the true nature of his scars is unknown. His cover stories are a joke to hide the real truth, which I believe is far worse than a drunk father or distraught wife.

I think the real story is he's a nut. A brilliant nut.

Interesting theory, Woodsprite. You seem to have the Joker pretty well summed up there. He really was a mastermind to have a plan for every contingency - a brilliant nut indeed.

The varied stories of the scars has always fascinated me though I really don't have any theories of how he could've possible gotten those scars, or what drove him to "insanity" for a lack of a better word.
