On one hand this is a slight disappointment for me - apart from not having a phone, I feel that adapting Avatar as a game would work by far the best as a highly immersive single-player experience rather than something MMO or multiplayer-based. After all, at least personally I feel that Avatar itself is by far the most enjoyable when there are no distractions from other people

Aside from that, as a professional game developer I don't hold the mobile gaming market in an especially high regard concerning the actual quality of the games as opposed to using games primarily as a monetization mechanism. Or to put it differently, more often than not mobile games are released for free and all aspects of the game are designed around getting the player to pay as much money as possible through smaller purchases in the game. Compare this to releasing a game with an up-front price, but designing the game itself to simply be really good and worth the initial price tag, and you end up with a far, far better experience - sadly this is very uncommon in mobile games and I very much doubt it'll be the case here.

That being said... at the same time, I never expected an Avatar game anytime soon anyway, so even though I personally will likely avoid this like the plague, it doesn't really feel like a disappointment per se and I'll just keep waiting for something more in tune with my personal expectations

I haven't played the AVATAR The Game and I won't be playing this one either simply because I don't feel like anyone is truly up for making an AVATAR game as I feel it should be made. I certainly don't want to play a game that was only designed around monetary prospects and not player experience.

The problem I have with an AVATAR MMO is that I feel it would lead up to an inevitable war between Na'vi players and RDA players. I don't like the idea of AVATAR being turned into a war game, but I can't think of any other way for it to work in a MMO format. It's difficult for me to really visualize what the game would really be about. It certainly isn't as straight forward as other games like Star Trek Online for example.

I agree, a better game would be a fully immersive single player adventure. Have a huge open world where you're free to explore Pandora and the goal could be to find sacred materials used in Na'vi ceremonies. Perhaps a "right of passage" challenge for young hunters to go out get an Ikran or a Direhorse and find something the clan needs or just survive. They could even make it so that the challenges are random so that two players starting at the same time can have a more unique experience. I believe that would be far better, but only if it was done right.

I definitely agree with all your points.

I don't think conflict/war is necessarily bad to feature in its very nature (from a certain point of view, even the movie could be considered a "war movie"), but I agree that a core focus on that aspect wouldn't feel very representative.

An open-world singleplayer game with few direct objectives and a focus on exploration for the sake of it, would certainly be quite amazing

I was excited about this until I realized it was for phones only. What the....really? We got these gaming systems that can handle incredibly detailed games and they are focusing on mobile phones?

I don't own a phone and haven't in 7-8 years. So I guess I'll miss out on this one.

mobile's where all the money is. all those microtransactions really add up.

but yeah. honestly i'm totally down for an avatar mmo, even if all i do is wander around and gawk at the scenery like i do in wow

but the thread title's a bit misleading? the link says it's a mobile strategy game, and while the article doesn't really expand on what exactly they mean by that (strategy is a very broad genre), i'm guessing it's something like mobile strike or clash of clans.
that's absolutely not the same thing as an mmo as most people understand the term.

I think it's classified as an MMO strategy game - so definitely an MMO, just not an MMORPG which is what a lot of people think of when they just hear "MMO".

That said, mobile games often use these terms very loosely, so I wouldn't count on much substance in either way.

yeah like, it's the technical definition of an mmo in that it involves people competing against and working with people over the internet.
